In the late 1980s, an extraordinary group of people worked together to enact a monumental civil rights law: people with disabilities, disability rights activists, legal experts, civil rights leaders, lobbying groups and legislators. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) changed the landscape of society in the United States by requiring reasonable accommodation of and prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities with respect to public services, employment, education, and housing. Enabling people with disabilities to live independent and thoroughly normal lives is the simple, yet profound, impact of the ADA. The leadership of the coalition responsible for the ADA created a legacy of fair mindedness and equal treatment and a brighter future for millions of Americans.
