The Capitol Crawl
On March 14, 1990, hundreds of people with disabilities advanced on the United States Capitol in protest of the stalling of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the House. People with disabilities crawled up the steps of the Capitol Building to highlight the inaccessibility of public infrastructure. The demonstration was effective: the bill passed through the House within four months.
"'Two centuries is long enough for people with disabilities to wait before the constitutional promise of justice is kept,' Justin W. Dart Jr., chairman of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, told the rally." |
